I personally use Max and XSI, so I can't quote too much on Maya from extensive knowledge, but both max and XSI can model the same things. I am a traditional sculptor that has decided to take the plunge and learn Zbrush to expand my marketability in the industry, however when I tried to take a class the school told me I must learn Maya first before going into Zbrush. Just to clarify you are saying that as long as I can map and box model a finished sculpt in Zbrush I should be fine? Thanks J. Create high poly mesh in Zbrush.
